Sources close to SteelOrbis have confirmed that domestic API X-52 line pipe prices have continued to climb due to still-rising hot rolled coil costs. Current domestic prices for 16” X52 line pipe are trending in the range of $86.50-$94.50 cwt. ($1,907-$2,083/mt or $1,730-$1,890/nt), FOB mill, for new production, against a range of $47.50-$50.00 cwt. ($1,047-$1,102/mt or $950-$1,000/nt) ex-mill, during the same reporting period last year.

“We’re seeing a lot more request for quotes, but we’re not seeing the inquiries turn into orders,” a source said. “And a lot of what we’re quoting is for projects that aren’t due until Q2. The concern is that we’ll get an order, buy the pipe and store it for future delivery, prices come down, and a possible cancellation from the customer, which would leave us stuck with the pipe.”

Another source agreed. “People are asking for quotes, but they’re scared to buy for stock.”
