Local Chinese steel pipe market prices have mostly increased slightly in the past week.

As of July 19 in China's three main steel markets, i.e., Shanghai, Guangzhou and Beijing, the average price of 20# (GB/T8162-1999) grade 108 mm x 4.5 mm seamless pipe now stands at $757/mt (RMB 5,100/mt), with 20# (GB/T8163-1999) grade 219 mm x 6 mm seamless pipe at $774/mt (RMB 5,217/mt). Meanwhile, on the same date, Q195-215 grade 48 mm x 3.25 mm welded pipe and Q215-235 grade 114 mm x 3.75 mm welded pipe prices in the above markets are standing at $663/mt (RMB 4,467/mt) and $656/mt (RMB 4,420/mt) respectively. All the above prices include 16 percent VAT.

In the given period, domestic seamless pipe prices in China have mostly remained stable, while prices have increased slightly for certain regions. Meanwhile, overall trade volume has remained weak. Environment measures in the country have continued to influence the production volumes and this situation has provided significant support for upstream billet prices. Meanwhile Chinese steel futures market has moved upward recently, which has also supported seamless pipe prices in spot market. However, since the trade volume is still weak amid seasonal factors, traders are mostly unwilling to increase their prices and still mostly focus on making sales. As for next week, prices in the local Chinese seamless pipe market are expected to mostly move stable.

Meanwhile, prices in the local Chinese welded pipe market have showed a slightly upward trend in past week and trade volume has continued at low levels. Upstream steel strip prices have trended upward due to environment measures and rebar futures have been strong, which have been the main reason for welded pipe prices to move upward. Also low market inventory has provided support for welded pipe prices in spot market. However downstream demand is still weak amid warm and rainy weather and this situation is likely to continue for a little while longer. As for next week, prices in the local Chinese welded pipe market are expected to increase slightly.
