Local Chinese steel pipe prices fluctuate

The local Chinese steel pipe prices have showed fluctuations during the past week.

As of March 17, in China's three main steel markets, i.e., Shanghai, Guangzhou and Beijing, the average price of 20# (GB/T8162-1999) grade 108 mm x 4.5 mm seamless pipe now stands at $975/mt (RMB6,183/mt), with 20# (GB/T8163-1999) grade 219 mm x 6 mm seamless pipe at $979/mt (RMB 6,210/mt). Meanwhile, on the same date, Q195-215 grade 48 mm x 3.25 mm welded pipe and Q215-235 grade 114 mm x 3.75 mm welded pipe prices in the above markets are standing at $868/mt (RMB 5,507/mt) and $864/mt (RMB 5,477/mt) respectively. All the above prices include 13 percent VAT.

Chinese seamless pipe prices are up slightly compared to last week. Prices of billet and raw materials have fluctuated, indicating some declines. Since trading activity and supply are both low, most traders have chosen to keep their quoted prices more or less stable. Some traders have raised their prices slightly compared to last week. Most buyers have been maintaining a wait-and-see stance. As for the week ahead, it is believed that seamless pipe prices may move down by a small margin.

Chinese welded pipe prices have indicated fluctuations, with some softening seen in prices. Overall trading activity has improved slightly amid better construction activity, but the demand side is only purchasing in line with needs, considering the declines in raw material and welded pipe prices, which have also impacted welded pipe prices. As for the week ahead, it is believed that welded pipe prices may move down slightly, amid weaker cost support and recovering demand.
