Turkish steelmakers have mostly issued their new local purchase prices for steel scrap with some sharp downwards revisions. The key reason is the low pricing in the import scrap segment, where negative expectations prevail for now. However, some producers indicate that the decrease in domestic scrap purchase prices in not sizeable enough based on production costs and finished steel sales price levels. “Import scrap prices have gone below $250/mt CFR [for HMS I/II 80:20], while there are mills that are temporarily stopping steel production. Therefore, local prices have to be lower too,” one of the sources said.
