The major EAF-based steel producer in Japan, Tokyo Steel, has announced an increase for local scrap only in its Tahara plant. Earlier this week, Tokyo Steel left out Tahara when an increase of JPY 1,000-3,000/mt in local scrap prices were announced.
Today, August 26, the raise announced for Tahara plant is JPY 3,000/mt effective as of August 27. After the $24/mt increase, prices for H2 scrap have reached JPY 45,000/mt ($329/mt) in Tahara plant. Despite the announced rise, Tokyo Steel’s general range for this grade is still at JPY 42,000-46,000/mt ($307-336/mt) depending on the mill. Exchange rate fluctuations are taken into consideration when calculating the dollar-based price changes, hence the dollar-based quotations have increased by $2/mt on the lower end and by $1/mt on the upper end since August 24.
The Tokyo Steel’s shindachi scrap prices for Tahara have also increased by JPY 3,000/mt today to JPY 47,000/mt ($343/mt). The general range has remained stable at the range of JPY 44,000-48,000/mt ($321-351/mt). Dollar based prices have increased by $1-2/mt due to the slight appreciation of the Japanese yen against the US dollar since August 24. All prices in question are delivered.
