Iron ore prices in Brazil have remained roughly the same in FOB terms over the last four weeks, reflecting stable iron ore prices in the Chinese spot market, coupled with stable ocean freight rates.

Sinter feed fines of 65 percent iron contents remain traded for export from Brazil at $61/mt, the equivalent lumps at $82/mt and blast furnace grade pellets at $119/mt, FOB conditions.

In the Brazilian domestic market, for equivalent ores, the prices remain at $55/mt for sinter feed fines, $76/mt for lumps and $113/mt for blast furnace grade pellets, ex-works, no taxes included.

The premium of Brazilian high-grade ore over low grade ore remains at a high level (36 percent) after recently reaching an all-time record high of 37 percent. The premium level reflects the aims of steel producers to reduce production costs and increase productivity ascribed by the higher performance of the high-grade ores in blast furnaces.

Preliminary indications from the Brazilian customs authorities point to a two-digit reduction, in July, from the 35.3 million mt of combined iron ore and pellets exported from the country in June.

The main destinations of the Brazilian ore (pellets excluded) in June were Asia (25.95 million mt, of which 21.41 million mt to China), the EU (3.89 million mt) and the Middle East (1.4 million mt), while for pellets, the main destinations were the EU (965,000 mt), Asia (600,000 mt), Africa (256,400 mt), the Middle East (200,000 mt) and South America (184,000 mt).
