Scrap prices have kept trending up in the Italian market in the past two weeks, due to the imbalance between supply and demand. "Today there's a price, tomorrow that's higher," commented one local supplier, adding that these circumstances are pushing other smaller suppliers to hold onto their material in order to be sure to sell it at the highest possible prices. This is further exacerbating the supply issue. The scrap categories lacking the most are the newly-generated material, due to reasons such as the slowdown of the automotive industry due to the semiconductors shortage. Meanwhile, local scrap prices have also been impacted by the latest development globally, with HMS I/II 80:20 import prices surpassing €500/mt CFR in Turkey. Meanwhile, rebar prices increased significantly in the Italian market in the past week, with producers quoting at around €700/mt ex-works.
