US import rebar offers rise again to lackluster demand

Further increases in rebar import offers to the US from Turkey this week have been largely met with shrugs, according to sources, as many buyers are sitting on the sidelines, waiting for imminent preliminary results in the trade case against Turkey, Japan and Taiwan.

Preliminary CVD rates are due to be announced Wednesday, with preliminary AD rates coming next week. Sources tell SteelOrbis that low CVD/AD rates for Turkey will not necessarily cause a “surge” in orders—instead, booking activity is expected to continue “as usual.” However, if the US DOC announces higher-than-predicted CVD/AD rates, sources say it will “chill” the rebar import market for the short term until “other players” go after lost market share.

For now, imported rebar in the US domestic market from Turkey is now in the range of $24.75-$25.75 cwt. ($495-$515/nt or $546-$568/mt) DDP loaded truck in US Gulf ports, reflecting an increase of $0.75 cwt. ($15/nt or $17/mt) in the last week.
