US import rebar arrivals into US ports have seen a substantial uptick in the last couple months, with US import data showing 111,108 mt in April (preliminary census data) and 114,965 mt in May (license data). Sources say many of the arrivals are positions, although prices for on-the-ground material aren’t that different that future arrival orders.
US rebar import offers for future arrival are now around $27.50-$28.50 cwt. ($606-$628/mt or $550-$570/nt) DDP loaded truck at US Gulf ports from Turkey, reflecting a $0.50 cwt. Import rebar positions at the port are reportedly being offered closer to $27.00-$28.00 cwt. ($595-$617/mt or $540-$560/nt) DDP loaded truck at US Gulf ports. Sources tell SteelOrbis that most current arrivals are still from pre-pandemic orders, and June will likely show a decline in volume. But the “noticeable uptick in interest” is being seen as a positive sign for the market.
