In the past two weeks, Turkish merchant bar export prices have decreased by an average of $25/mt to $1,000-1,020/mt FOB, for late May-June shipments. Sources report a few merchant bar re-rollers are giving aggressive prices and voicing far below $1,000/mt FOB. “We are attempting to keep our merchant export offer prices at a minimum of $1,000/mt FOB taking current production costs into account,” one source mentioned.
International demand is relatively slow due to Ramadan in the Middle East and North Africa. In addition, rising freight rates are making merchant bar export deals to the Far East and Latin America more difficult. Sources report a few inquiries are on the table for the next EU quota round which begins July 1.
