In the past two weeks, local Turkish merchant bar prices have increased by TRY 1,650-1,850/mt in the local currency, while down by $15-33/mt on US dollar basis, mainly due to the depreciation of the Turkish lira against the US dollar, and against the backdrop of relatively firm scrap and billet prices. The exchange rate was at $1 = TRY 10.16 on Tuesday, November 16. Most local buyers are reluctant to conclude new purchases amid the unclear financial situation in the country.
Most Turkish merchant bar re-rollers are offering material for January delivery or limited tonnages available either from stocks. An Izmir-based mill has kept its price of HEA/HEB (100-200 mm, standard) unchanged at $950/mt ex-works, while special discounts are applicable for serious buyers.
