Local Turkish merchant bar prices have fallen by around TRY 230/mt ($15/mt) in the Izmir and Denizli regions amid slow trading activity and currency fluctuations over the past week. Moreover, official dollar-based merchant bar prices have been mostly stable in the Iskenderun and Karabuk regions over the same period.
Most buyers in the local merchant bar market are maintaining a wait-and-see stance ahead of the Turkish Central Bank’s interest rate decision due this Thursday, and are exerting pressure for further discounts due to the aggressive pricing for import billets from Russia.
Most merchant bar sellers are offering for September delivery and only limited tonnages are available either from stocks or for late August delivery. Sources report that official HEA/HEB (100-200 mm, standard) prices have remained stable at $1,020-1,050/mt ex-works.
