Local Chinese semi-finished steel prices mostly move down

During the week ending September 24, Chinese domestic semi-finished steel prices have mostly moved down, while transaction activity in the market has been at medium levels. Average prices of steel billet and slab in the local Chinese market are presented in the following table.

During the given week, though the demand for semi-finished steel in China has been at decent levels, the downtrend of ferrous metal futures prices on September 17-20 continued to exert an obvious impact on semi-finished steel prices. Since the period of production restrictions is approaching, steelmakers have started to reduce their purchases of semi-finished steel. However, semi-finished steel output will also be negatively affected due to the approaching National Day holiday, which will bolster prices. It is thought that semi-finished steel prices in the Chinese domestic market will edge up slightly in the coming week.
