During the week ending July 9, Chinese domestic semi-finished steel prices have mostly moved on a downward trend, while transaction activity in the market has been at low-to-medium levels. Average prices of steel billet and slab in the local Chinese market are presented in the following table.
During the given week, downstream steelmakers have mostly consumed their inventories of semi-finished steel against the backdrop of the frequent changes in semi-finished steel prices. Meanwhile, steelmakers’ profitability has shrunk due to the high cost of iron ore and slack demand, with the latter weakening the support for semi-finished steel prices. It is expected that semi-finished steel prices in China will soften slightly in the coming week.
