During the week ending September 25, Chinese domestic semi-finished steel prices have mostly decreased, while transaction activity in the market has been at low-to-medium levels. Average prices of steel billet and slab in the local Chinese market are presented in the following table.
During the given week, steelmakers’ blast furnaces’ capacity utilization rate has decreased, exerting a negative impact on demand for semi-finished steel, dragging down prices. Meanwhile, the weather has been bad in southern China, also negatively affecting the demand for semi-finished steel. Ferrous metal futures prices have edged up first, though moved down later in the given week. As the National Day holiday (October 1-7) is approaching, market participants have held a wait-and-see stance. It is expected that semi-finished steel prices in the Chinese market will likely move down in the coming week.
