During the week ending September 18, Chinese domestic semi-finished steel prices have mostly decreased, while transaction activity in the market has been at medium levels. Average prices of steel billet and slab in the local Chinese market are presented in the following table.
During the given week, domestic steelmakers’ blast furnace capacity utilization rates have increased slightly, while most steelmakers have stepped up their usage of their own semi-finished steel outputs, resulting in reduced semi-finished steel supply to the spot market. However, ferrous metal futures prices in China are still considered to be on the low side, weakening the support for semi-finished steel prices. Approaching the winter season, demand for semi-finished steel will likely improve as finished steel producers are expected to build up some inventories. It is thought that semi-finished steel prices in the Chinese domestic market will move upwards in the coming week.
