Local Chinese semi-finished steel prices follow upward trend

During the week ending March 19, Chinese domestic semi-finished steel prices have seen an upward trend, while transaction activity in the market has been at low-to-medium levels. Average prices of steel billet and slab in the local Chinese market are presented in the following table.

During the given week, supply of semi-finished steel in the domestic market has been tight due to previous and ongoing environmental protection measures in Hebei Province, with this tightness of supply bolstering semi-finished steel prices. Meanwhile, rebar futures at Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) have fluctuated on a soft trend. However, demand for finished steel will improve in the coming period and this is expected to provide support for semi-finished steel prices. It is thought that semi-finished steel prices in the Chinese domestic market will rise further in the coming week.
