During the week ending January 22, Chinese domestic semi-finished steel prices have mostly increased slightly, though indicating declines in Fuzhou in Fujian Province and sideways movement in Jiangyin. In the given week, transaction activity in the market has been at medium levels. Average prices of steel billet and slab in the local Chinese market are presented in the following table.
During the given week, supply of semi-finished steel in China has seen some increases, though demand has not shown any improvement, resulting in slight decreases in Fuzhou in Fujian Province. However, inventories of semi-finished steel are at relatively low levels, providing support for prices. Some downstream users have been willing to build up stocks. It is expected that semi-finished steel prices in the Chinese domestic market will edge down slightly in the coming week due to the slackening of stock replenishment.
