During the week ending October 9, Chinese domestic semi-finished steel prices have decreased, while transaction activity in the market has been at low-to-medium levels. Average prices of steel billet and slab in the local Chinese market are presented in the following table.
During the given week, capacity utilization rates of blast furnaces in China have increased slightly, resulting in higher semi-finished steel supply to the market. However, rolling mills are under pressure from lower profitability and have reduced their consumption of semi-finished steel. It is expected that semi-finished steel prices in the Chinese market will soften further in the coming week.
