As of March 27, Chinese domestic semi-finished steel prices have moved down significantly week on week, while transaction activity in the market has been at low levels. Average prices of steel billet and slab in the local Chinese market are presented in the following table.
During the given week, rolling mills in China have continued to reduce production, resulting in lower demand for semi-finished steel. In addition, domestic finished steel prices have decreased significantly over the past week, exerting a negative impact on semi-finished steel prices. As for the coming week, some finished steel producers will likely increase production, which will boost consumption of semi-finished steel and provide support for semi-finished steel prices. It is expected that semi-finished steel prices will continue their declining trend in the coming, but at a slower pace.
