Domestic wire rod prices in Turkey have moved up over the past week amid the sharp rises seen in import scrap prices in Turkey and also due to demand staying at good levels. The continued depreciation of the Turkish lira against the US dollar seen recently was making it hard for Turkish steel mills to increase their domestic wire rod quotations, but with the Turkish lira regaining some strength against the US dollar as of today, December 5, compared to yesterday, Turkish steelmakers have been able to increase their domestic wire rod quotations on dollar basis. Having increased by $20-25/mt week on week on dollar basis, domestic wire rod prices in Turkey have mostly remained stable on Turkish lira basis during the past week.
With Turkish steel producers still observed to be receiving plenty of orders, considering the current price levels of scrap and billet as well as the strong demand received from both domestic and export markets, it is believed that domestic wire rod quotations may increase further in the coming period.
