During the past three weeks, demand in the local Turkish merchant bar market has remained at low levels. Market sources state that higher import scrap and billet quotations have increased merchant bar production costs in Turkey, though the main reason for the TRY 90-160/mt rise seen in domestic merchant bar prices is the depreciation of the Turkish lira against the US dollar. On the other hand, SteelOrbis has been informed that merchant bar producers in Turkey’s Karabuk region are offering discounts of TRY 30/mt in deals for large tonnages.
