During the week ending October 31, Chinese domestic semi-finished steel prices have mostly indicated a downward trend, while transaction activity in the market has been at low-to-medium levels. Average prices of steel billet and slab in the local Chinese market are presented in the following table.
During the given week, more maintenance works were implemented at blast furnaces in China amid environmental measures. Approaching the winter season when production cuts will be started (November 15 2017-March 15 2018), some steelmakers using blast furnaces have built up their stocks of semi-finished steel ahead of restrictions on their output. Meanwhile, inventory levels of semi-finished steel held by downstream rolling mills are currently at relatively high levels and so these mills have less need to purchase semi-finished steel at the moment. It is thought that semi-finished steel prices in China will likely edge down slightly in the coming week.
