During the week ending December 5, Chinese domestic semi-finished steel prices have continued their upward trend, while transaction activity in the market has been at low-to-medium levels. Average prices of steel billet and slab in the local Chinese market are presented in the following table.
During the given week, finished steel prices in China have moved at high levels, providing support for domestic semi-finished steel prices, which have also been boosted by reduced supply caused by production cuts during the winter season. At the same time, ferrous metal futures prices in China have moved upwards, exerting a positive impact on the domestic semi-finished steel market. However, with semi-finished prices having risen quickly, demand from downstream users has not shown any improvement. It is thought that semi-finished steel prices in the Chinese domestic market will likely move sideways in the coming week.
