Pricing for US import HDG coil has once again remained stable, although some question whether Section 232 steel tariffs against Mexico will eventually be lifted. Current data from the US Department of Commerce show 10,000 mt in import permits for Mexican HDG in September.
“Everyone knows that Section 232 has nothing to do with defense and everything to do with protectionism,” a source said. “There is no reason that Canada, Mexico and a laundry list of other countries should be considered ‘threats.’”
During a Monday press conference, Donald Trump said that steel is needed for the defense of the nation.
“What are we going to do? Go and say, ‘Oh, we’ll get our steel from an — like another country?’ We can’t do that,” Trump said. “Excuse me. We can’t do that. So we need steel and we need it badly for defense. So I’m very proud of what’s happened with the steel industry.”
Trump said the issue of steel tariffs against Mexico will be addressed separately; it’s currently believed that tariffs may be replaced with quotas.
