The recent $2.00 cwt. ($44/mt or $40/nt) price increase for US domestic HDG coil appears to have gained acceptance. Last week, SteelOrbis reported that prices had increased by $1.00 cwt. ($22/mt or $20/nt); this week, prices have firmed by another $1.00 cwt. ($22/mt or $20/nt). However, the new higher prices only reflect the most recent price increase announcement, not the one that preceded it, and market players are unsure of the prospects of both increases absorbing into the market.
“We’re watching the market closely, and we’re trying to determine whether both increases will be accepted or whether the second was announced in hopes of pushing through the first,” a source said, noting that the HDG coil market seems to be the strongest product at the current time.
SteelOrbis’ current expectation is that the current price momentum is still pointing upward, and that US HDG prices will continue to adjust upward before leveling off. However, any further adjustments are expected to be slight, and it is not expected that prices will adjust sharply.
