Prices for US domestic hot dipped galvanized (HDG) coil continue to trend uncertain due customer hesitation, which is largely tied to the still-pending Section 232 investigation. On one hand, buyers have been reluctant to place large orders with US mills due to the recent softness within the spot market.
On the other hand, there is growing concern that if the Section 232 investigation results in tariffs against offshore steelmakers, that the US spot market “could shoot up overnight,” a source said. “The guys who buy a lot of weight are worried about supply tightening up, and lead times jumping out to 12 to 16 weeks depending on how all this plays out.”
At current, most commonly heard spot price transaction range for base price US domestic hot dipped galvanized (HDG) is still trending at $40.50-$42.50 cwt. ($893-$937/mt or $810-$850/nt), ex-mill, although deals are becoming “increasingly prevalent.”
