Traders have said that the closeness in price of US domestic and import HDG and Galvalume coil have many buyers reluctant to book tons offshore.
“We’re having a hard time getting our customers to book import, unless it’s an unusual specialty grade that’s not being made domestically,” a source said. Mexican mills are faring a little better with interest, sources say, since lead times are similar to what’s available in the US domestic market.
Rising US domestic HDG prices, however, may help spur an interest in booking offshore, should prices firm substantially; the current expectation is that while domestic pricing momentum is pointing upward, in the absence of a “black swan event,” it’s not believed that domestic prices will spike.
