During the week ending June 5, average prices of medium steel plate in the Chinese domestic market have indicated downward movement, while shipbuilding plate prices have increased, with transaction activity in the overall steel plate market at low-to-medium levels. Average steel plate prices in China are presented in the table below.
After the Dragon Boat Festival holiday (May 28-30) in China, domestic steel plate prices have mostly declined, though shipbuilding plate prices have risen. Steelmakers' inventories are not at very high levels, while iron ore prices are at relatively low levels, resulting in good profit margins for steelmakers and so they are expected to maintain high capacity utilization rates. However, the rainy season in China will exert a negative impact on demand. Moreover, the futures market has mostly indicated a downward trend, also negatively influencing market participants' expectations. It is thought that steel plate prices in the Chinese domestic market will likely edge down in the coming week.
