As of January 29, average prices of steel plate in the Chinese domestic market have increased slightly on week-on-week basis, while transaction activity in the overall steel plate market has been at low levels. Average steel plate prices in China are presented in the tables below.
During the past week, HRC prices at Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) have increased, exerting a positive impact on prices of flat steel, including steel plate, in the Chinese domestic spot market. Furthermore, due to the rising trend of semi-finished steel prices in China at the beginning of the given week, steel plate prices rose quickly in that period, though market participants have been unwilling to accept the rapid rises, resulting in declines in steel plate prices in the latter part of the given week. Inventories of steel plate in the spot market are at relatively low levels, providing support for steel plate prices. It is thought that steel plate prices in the Chinese domestic market will likely move sideways in the coming week.
