During the week ending June 10, average prices of steel plate in the Chinese domestic market have declined due to slack demand, while transaction activity in the overall steel plate market has been at low levels. Average steel plate prices in China are presented in the table below.
During the given week, due to hot weather and the Dragon Boat Festival holiday, downstream users have been unwilling to purchase steel plate, resulting in low activity. Market participants have a pessimistic view of the future prospects for the steel plate market. Meanwhile, steel plate producers’ capacity utilization rates are at relatively high levels, increasing the pressure on prices from the supply side. Currently, the high levels of import iron ore prices provide support for steel plate prices from the cost side. It is thought that steel plate prices in the Chinese domestic market will decline further in the coming week.
