How soft is the US HDG spot market?

The current situation within the US domestic HDG coil spot market largely echoes what SteelOrbis reported last week.

Deals up to $1.00 cwt. ($22/mt or $20/nt) below the average transaction range continue to be available to volume buyers, with some sources having reported they have, in some case, been able to get deals up to $1.50 cwt. ($33/mt or $30/nt) below the average transaction range. Transactions at that price point are not representative of the market as a whole, and for now, are seen as being an outlier.

The question as to whether the official average transaction range will endure additional downward pressure, has yet to be answered. On Friday, SteelOrbis reported that a mid-month survey of buyers and sellers of US domestic scrap, indicates that February scrap prices will trend at soft sideways. If scrap prices win up trending downward, this could lead to additional softening within the US HDG spot market.

Current average price transaction ranges are listed in the chart below.
