Chinese domestic steel plate market mostly edges up slightly

During the week ending April 9, average prices of common carbon and low alloy medium plate in the Chinese domestic market have increased slightly, though very small downticks have been seen in shipbuilding plate prices, while transaction activity in the overall steel plate market has improved somewhat, though remaining at low-to-medium levels. Average steel plate prices in China are presented in the table below.

During the given week, inventory levels of steel plate have decreased compared to the previous week due to improvement in demand from downstream users. Meanwhile, steelmakers’ steel plate offer prices have been at comparatively high levels, which will provide some support for steel plate prices in the coming period. At the same time, traders built up stocks ahead of the Tomb Sweeping Holiday (April 5-8), bolstering steel plate prices. Although traders are more upbeat than they were before, US-China trade tensions will exert a negative influence on sentiment in the steel plate market. It is thought that domestic steel plate prices in China will likely edge up slightly in the coming week.
