During the week ending March 19, average prices of domestic medium carbon plate prices in the Chinese domestic market have followed diverse trends, with prices in Shanghai softening compared to the previous week, while prices in Tianjin and Lecong have increased slightly. Additionally, domestic boiler, container and shipbuilding plate quotations in China have remained stable week on week. In the meantime, transaction activity in the overall steel plate market has been at low-to-medium levels. Average steel plate prices in China are presented in the table below.
During the given week, ferrous metal futures prices in China first declined, then increased later in the week, while today, March 19, they have declined again, and so sentiment among players in the steel plate spot market has once again become somewhat more bearish. However, inventories in the steel plate market are lower than in the previous week, reflecting the gradual recovery of demand. At the same time, steelmakers’ ex-works prices will provide support for steel plate spot prices. It is thought that steel plate prices in the Chinese domestic market will move sideways in the coming week.
