WTO approves EU retaliation of US Anti-Dumping Act of 1916
European Union (EU) previously requested from World Trade Organization (WTO) to sanction legislation that would lead US lawmakers to revoke Anti-Dumping Act of 1916. As the Act allows US companies to claim material injury from foreign imports, including Japanese producers, into US market, it created negative trade conditions for EU exporters.
WTO announced its ruling on the Act in September 2000, stating that the Act is found to be illegal. However, US Congress has not implemented any change and the Act has remained in effect since then.
In the framework of this development, WTO announced yesterday that EU's retaliation of Anti-Dumping of 1916 is approved by the arbitrators. Accordingly, EU may effect similar duties on US producers who have benefited from the Act.
It is stated that,
Japan supports EU in this case, as the Act covers Japanese producers, too.
Now, EU is in preparation of imposing trade sanctions against US next week. However, it is speculated that the approval WTO may create tension on Atlantic trade.
