In April this year, world pig iron production amounted to 100.8 million mt, falling by 0.4 percent compared to March and increasing by 4.6 percent compared to the same month of 2016, according to the preliminary data covering 38 countries accounting for approximately 99 percent of total world blast furnace pig iron production, as announced by the World Steel Association (worldsteel).
Meanwhile, in the January-April of this year, world pig iron production totaled 389.5 million mt, up by 2.8 percent compared to the same period last year.
In April, pig iron output in Asia amounted to 79.29 million mt, up 4.6 percent, with 62.6 million mt produced by China, up 5.3 percent, 6.5 million mt produced by Japan, remaining almost stable, and 5.5 million mt produced by India, increasing by nine percent - with all comparisons on year-on-year basis. Meanwhile, in the same month, EU countries produced 7.9 million mt of pig iron, up 9.4 percent, while the CIS produced 6.2 million mt, down 5.9 percent, both on year-on-year basis.
