In May this year, world pig iron production amounted to 106.7 million mt, increasing by 4.5 percent from April this year and by 3.1 percent compared to the same month of last year, according to the preliminary data covering 38 countries accounting for approximately 99 percent of total world blast furnace pig iron production, as announced by the World Steel Association (worldsteel).
Meanwhile, in the January-May of this year, world pig iron production totaled 502.41 million mt, up by 1.2 percent compared to the same period last year.
In May, pig iron output in Asia amounted to 84.6 million mt, up 3.6 percent, with 66.8 million mt produced by China, up four percent, 6.8 million mt produced by Japan, increasing by 1.6 percent, and 6.03 million mt produced by India, rising by 12.5 percent - with all comparisons on year-on-year basis. Meanwhile, in the same month, EU countries produced 8.2 million mt of pig iron, up 0.9 percent, while the CIS produced 6.4 million mt, increasing by 3.1 percent, both on year-on-year basis.
