World DRI output up 8.6 percent in January-August

According to the preliminary data released by the World Steel Association (worldsteel), global direct reduced iron (DRI) production in the first eight months of this year came to 42.13 million metric tons, increasing by 8.6 percent compared to the corresponding period of 2010.
 
Meanwhile, in August this year world DRI output totaled 5.47 million metric tons, decreasing 0.9 percent as compared to the previous month and up by 7.9 percent year on year.
 
The worldsteel data show that India was the largest DRI producer among the countries surveyed in August 2011. India's DRI output was 2.36 million metric tons in August, remaining unchanged compared to July levels and up four percent year on year, followed by Iran and Venezuela, with outputs of 820,000 mt and 475,000 mt respectively.
