Votorantim Metais e Zinco, which owns a zinc complex in Minas Gerais state, requested from local authorities an operating license to install an open pit and a zinc waste dam. Zinc is used, among other things, to produce galvanized steel.

Votorantim Metais said it plans to install a zinc dam waste as well as mining treatment unit in Vazante, Minas Gerais state, for a 10-year timeline. The Vazante complex produces about 1.2 million mt/year of zinc waste.

A Minas Gerais environmental authority suggested the state should approve the company’s request in a document filing released this week. The request aims to help the company expand its existing activities in the area.
