Brazilian miner and iron ore producer Vale has named this week Carlos Medeiros as the company’s new safety and operation excellence executive, following the deadly Mariana and Brumadinho incidents.

Vale’s appointment of a safety executive comes as the death toll for Brumadinho reaches 246 people. The company said the nomination of Medeiros is in line with the company’s “new commitment” with society as well as the producer’s aim to become the world’s “safest and [most] trustworthy company.”

Medeiros is a senior executive, and was previously the North American CEO for Ball Corporation.
