Mexican president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Friday in a press conference the USMCA agreement should boost the local economy. Obrador said the deal would be a “key” element to help Mexico achieve development, not only in economic terms.

Obrador said the agreement should also boost foreign investments in Mexico and help the nation to improve exports.

“The agreement will reinforce this belief (that Mexico is an option to invest) at a global scale,” he said.

Mexico was the first country to ratify the agreement. Jesus Seade, deputy foreign minister for Mexico, said earlier in October during the 53rd annual meeting of worldsteel in Mexico the USMCA agreement could be ratified by the US by November 2019.

Seade said at the time the deal was moving toward completion.
