MUSA, the iron ore subsidiary of Brazil flats steelmaker Usiminas, has filed a request at a Minas Gerais state environmental agency to invest BRL 140 million in a new iron ore waste system for its Itatiaiuçu mine, located in the city of same name in Minas Gerais.

MUSA said the system is more expensive when compared to traditional iron ore waste systems. The method, known filtrated iron ore waste, is seen as a solution for regions that have limited access to water.

MUSA expects to generate 300 new jobs with the project. Once it gets the environmental license to start the project, the company will have 12 months to install the equipment.
