Brazilian flats steelmaker Usiminas said this week it will furlough part of its workforce at several subsidiaries, in an effort to fight the Covid-19 outbreak.

Employees will take “collective vacations” at both Soluções em Aço Usiminas SA (SU) and Usiminas Mecânica.

It said 29.6 percent of Usiminas workers at SU will anticipate vacations. The measure should reach another 46.3 percent of Usiminas Mecanica’s workforce.

Usiminas said it will reduce production at its Porto Alegre, Guarulhos, Betim, Taubaté and Suape units, as well as at its Usiminas Mecanica’s Ipatinga facility.

Soluções em Aço Usiminas SA is na Usiminas-owned steel service center. Usiminas Mecanica is the company’s engineering business.

Usiminas also owns an iron ore business (MUSA) and a flats steelmaking business.
