Brazilian steelmakers Usiminas and ArcelorMittal Tubarao, which is part of ArcelorMittal Brazil, were awarded the Steelie Awards by the worldsteel association in the excellence in sustainability category. Both steelmakers were recognized for paving rural roads in Brazil by using steel byproducts, worldsteel said this week.
Usiminas said it donates the steel aggregate to pave rural roads. Known as Caminhos do Vale (Valley Ways), the project has donated 1.3 million mt of steel aggregate to pave rural roads in Brazil. So far the project has paved about 850 kilometers (528 miles) of roads.
The excellence in sustainability award recognizes a member company or a national or regional association for a specific sustainability initiative that has made a positive impact, or provided benefits in all three areas of sustainability – including economic, environmental and social performance, worldsteel said.
