US wire rod imports up 65.7 percent in January

According to final census data from the US Department of Commerce, US imports of wire rod totaled 63,717 mt in January 2020, up 65.7 percent from December but down 46.9 percent from January 2019 levels. By value, wire rod imports totaled $44.0 million in January 2020, compared to $27.4 million in the previous month and $87.7 million in the same month last year.

The US imported the most wire rod from Canada in January, with 29,584 mt, compared to 22,102 mt in December and 26,486 mt in January 2019. Other top sources of imported wire rod in January include Brazil, with 14,962 mt; Japan, with 10,660 mt; Korea, with 5,645 mt; and Germany, with 2,003 mt.
