US wire rod imports down 58.1 percent in May

According to final census data from the US Department of Commerce, US imports of wire rod totaled 56,431 mt in May 2019, down 58.1 percent from April and down 53.5 percent from May 2018 levels. By value, wire rod imports totaled $44.6 million in May 2019, compared to $94.2 million in the previous month and $90.4 million in the same month last year.

The US imported the most wire rod from Canada in May, with 18,320 mt, compared to 25,331 mt in April and 44,362 mt in May 2018. Other top sources of imported wire rod in May include Japan, with 18,189 mt; Brazil, with 6,528 mt; India, with 5,048 mt; and Germany, with 3,137 mt.
