US steel shipments up in May but down year-on-year

The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported today that for the month of May 2013, US steel mills shipped 8.05 million net tons, a 0.9 percent increase from the 7.98 million net tons shipped in the previous month, April 2013, and a 4.6 percent decrease from the 8,436,831 net tons shipped in May 2012. Shipments year-to-date in 2013 are 39.6 million net tons, a 6 percent decrease compared with 2012 shipments of 42.1 million net tons for the first five months of the year.

A comparison of May shipments to the previous month of April shows the following changes: hot rolled sheet shipments were up 5 percent; hot dipped galvanized sheets and strip, fell1 percent; and cold rolled sheet shipments dropped by 10 percent.
