US Steel reports $54 million net earnings for Q1

US Steel reported first quarter 2019 net earnings of $54 million, compared to first quarter 2018 net earnings of $18 million. Net sales in Q1 totaled $3.49 billion, compared to $3.15 billion in the same quarter of 2018.

Steel shipments for the quarter totaled 3.99 million net tons, compared to 3.84 million net tons in Q1 2018. Broken down by segment, Q1 shipments of flat-rolled products totaled 2.73 million net tons, tubular product shipments totaled 207,000 net tons, and shipments from US Steel Europe totaled 1.06 million net tons.

Raw steel capability utilization in Q1 reached 73 percent, compared to 66 percent in the same quarter of 2018.
