US steel production for week ended May 14 (upd)

For the week ended May 14, 2005, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reports that domestic raw steel production totaled 1.9 million net tons at a capacity utilization rate of 86%. The corresponding week of 2004 saw production of 2.0 million net tons at a capacity utilization rate of 90%. 2005's production figures for the week ended May 14 represent a 1.8% year-on-year decrease and a 3% week-on-week decrease. Year-to-date production through May 14 was adjusted to 39'984'000 tons at a utilization rate of 88.5%. This represents a 0.6% decrease from the previous year's production-to-date of 39'209'000 tons at a utilization rate of 91.2%. Regionally, steel production in the Northwest Indiana/Chicago area dropped 19'000 tons to 476'000 tons. Meanwhile in the Pittsburgh/Youngstown, Ohio district, production fell 5000 tons to 241'000 tons from the previous week.
