The American Iron and Steel Institute and Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA) has sent a letter to the White House and US Congress, urging President Trump to impose trade measures to curb excess steel capacity and surging imports, according to a Reuters report.

Steel companies that signed the letter included Alton Steel, AK Steel Corp, Cleveland-Cliffs Inc, TimkenSteel Corp, Nucor Corp and ArcelorMittal USA.

“The administration should not delay in taking meaningful action under section 232 to prevent surging offshore steel imports from undermining our national security and the viability of the US steel industry,” SMA said, in its statement commenting on the president’s State of the Union address.

Results of the Section 232 investigation that examined if steel imports were impairing the country’s national security were submitted on January 11 to President Trump who has 90 days to decide on what action is to be taken.
